Director's Notes
Too many times today we see the image of the African-American male
as an uncaring, invisible, dead-beat dad. Of course American society
has fostered that image, and of course "they" want us
to be, and remain invisible.
With Traces
we see the dismantling of that image. Here we have two "fathers"
torn because of their friendship and their love for Trace.
If we as African-American
Men can begin to be responsible and committed to supporting each
other, we can dispel these negative images that permeate through
this society.
Let's not let
the positive momentum of the Million-Man March fade into oblivion.
Please let's work to change, and rise above the "Big Hand"
trying to keep us down.
I dedicated
this production to my father, and late Grandfather, who remain a
strong influence in my life.
"I don't
know. I can't explain it. There's just something about being around
your Father that keeps you warm."
P.S. Just once
I'd like to see an athlete on the sideline, or in the dugout, or
at courtside, look at the camera and say, "Hi, Dad."
