Director's Notes

Too many times today we see the image of the African-American male as an uncaring, invisible, dead-beat dad. Of course American society has fostered that image, and of course "they" want us to be, and remain invisible.

With Traces we see the dismantling of that image. Here we have two "fathers" torn because of their friendship and their love for Trace.

If we as African-American Men can begin to be responsible and committed to supporting each other, we can dispel these negative images that permeate through this society.

Let's not let the positive momentum of the Million-Man March fade into oblivion. Please let's work to change, and rise above the "Big Hand" trying to keep us down.

I dedicated this production to my father, and late Grandfather, who remain a strong influence in my life.

"I don't know. I can't explain it. There's just something about being around your Father that keeps you warm."

P.S. Just once I'd like to see an athlete on the sideline, or in the dugout, or at courtside, look at the camera and say, "Hi, Dad."

Playwright's Notes

When I was about fifteen I came to realize that I had no real heroes in my life that I could relate to with my own experience. So, as any ninth-grader would, I set out to create my own. The result was a 120-page novel upon which this place is loosely based. In the writing of this novel, I discovered my hero, Blake Anderson, a sharp, handsome, 35-year-old, Los Angeles lawyer--but in growing just a little older, and I hope a little wiser--I outgrew this hero, realizing that with the right guidance I could grow up to be more awesome than him. But in 1993, not content with who I was, I set out to find that hero again with a play that would be called "Traces". This time I never found that here--only "Traces" of what he must be like. "Traces" that pointed right back at me.
